Title: How dark is dark matter? Electromagnetic moments and signals in direct detection experiments

Abstract: This seminar focuses on electromagnetic moments of dark matter and their ultraviolet generation via quantum effects. Within an effective field theory framework for spin-1/2 dark matter, I discuss their phenomenological implications and show that direct detection experiments such as XENONnT provide strong sensitivity to this class of operators. The resulting bounds can be translated into constraints on UV-complete models. As case studies, I present results for a tau-philic Dirac dark matter toy model and examine the implications for supersymmetric neutralino dark matter. Finally, I comment on using celestial bodies as complementary probes of dark matter electromagnetic moments.
